In 2020, during the global COVID crisis, OCIMF set up remote inspections as a temporary solution and they continued as an option after on-board inspections resumed.
OCIMF has now made the decision, in consultation with its membership, to remove the option to request remote Ship Inspection Report Programme (SIRE), BIRE and Offshore Vessel Inspection Database (OVID) inspections from 12:00 UTC on 2 Sept 2024. Availability of published reports, across all programmes, will also revert to 12 months on the same date and time.
The decision to discontinue remote inspections reflects OCIMF’s commitment to on-board inspections as the preferred way to maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance within the marine industry.
The SIRE and OVID programmes have been a cornerstone of marine safety protocols, providing detailed inspections that help manage the risks associated with operating oil tankers, barges, and other vessels.
This approach is further supported by SIRE’s new iteration, SIRE 2.0, which is set to introduce enhanced inspection protocols, leveraging advanced technologies and methodologies with a focus on human factors to further elevate the standard of on-board vessel inspections.
All remote inspections in progress will need to be completed, submitted, and published with operator comments prior to 12:00 UTC, 2 Sept 2024.
