The Executive Committeeas selected Dr. Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President Shell Shipping & Maritime, as its next Chairman.

At the 74th meeting in Dubai the Committee agreed the Chairmanship would pass to Dr. Henderson from Mr. John Ridgway who is stepping down after three years, but will continue as a Vice Chairman of the organisation.

Commenting Mr. Ridgway said, “I am extremely pleased that Grahaeme has agreed to undertake the role of Chairman of OCIMF. His broad energy industry experience, together with his strong focus on safe shipping and maritime operations will be a great asset to the organisation.”

Dr. Henderson said, “I want to thank John, also on behalf of OCIMF, for his dedication and significant contributions to this organisation. He has provided the growing membership with greater opportunities, ensuring that OCIMF remains positioned to serve the industry for many years to come.

“It is an exciting time in shipping and maritime, where we see strong growth and a multitude of technological opportunities. I am honoured to be working with the members of OCIMF to take forward a number of our priorities. First and foremost, we must continue to focus on the safety of the people that work in this important industry. We also must care for the environment to protect the oceans for the future. I also believe we must collaborate and build links with other shipping bodies to develop a more cohesive and effective community.”

John Ridgway joined BP in 1971 as an officer cadet. Following thirteen years of seagoing interspersed with college education, and rising to the rank of Captain, he spent one year undertaking an Extra Masters course. Commencing a shore career within the BP Group in 1984, and mostly within BP Shipping, he has been involved in many facets of Shipping’s business.

In 2002, John was appointed Deputy Chief Executive for BP Shipping, and in 2008 was promoted to the role of CEO.

Dr. Grahaeme Henderson is responsible for Shell’s global shipping and maritime activities, including direct management of one of the world’s largest and most technically advanced fleets of LNG carriers, in addition to crude and product tankers. He is strongly focused on safety and the environment, improving the efficiency of shipping and maritime operations, and driving technology and innovation.

Grahaeme has been a member of the Shell Trading Executive Committee and a Director of Shell International Trading and Shipping Company since April 2011. He is active in a variety of shipping industry bodies including UK Chamber of Shipping and is Chairman of the UK Shipping Defence Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Oceans. Grahaeme was previously Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum and Brunei Shell Tankers. His career with Shell has also included assignments in the UK, Nigeria, Syria and the Netherlands.

Dr. Henderson’s appointment takes effect on Monday 1 December 2014.
