Key Details of the Enhanced Security Area:

  • Location: The zone is situated south of the established Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Strait of Hormuz, specifically within Omani territorial waters.
  • Purpose (Project Freedom): The area was created to facilitate the evacuation of roughly 1,000 ships trapped in the Gulf following Iran’s restriction of the Strait on Feb 28, 2026.
  • Safety Warning: The JMIC has officially warned that the standard shipping lanes are “extremely hazardous” due to unmitigated mine threats, advising all traffic to use the new route.
  • Coordination: Vessels using this route are advised to communicate directly with Omani authorities via VHF channel 16.
  • Security Posture: The U.S. has pledged to support this area with guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members.

The situation in the region remains at a critical security level, with ongoing risks of drone strikes and GPS jamming from Iranian forces.

Information regarding the Joint Maritime Information Center’s structure and its role in maritime security can be found in their official, Combined Maritime Forces description.
