The Latin American Agreement on Port State Control of Vessels (Vina del Mar, 1992) announced about the implementation of the 2025 Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC), focused on Ballast Water Management, as per the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM, 2004).
The referred CIC will take place from 1 September to 30 November 2025, with the active participation of the VMA Member Authorities, which will work together to conduct these inspections in the main ports of the region. This CIC will be carried out jointly with the Tokyo and Paris Memoranda of Understanding.
The main objective of the 2025 CIC is to check the compliance of 2004 BWM requirements, which purpose is to prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species through the uncontrolled discharge of ballast water. These inspections will assess the existence and correct implementation of the ballast water management plan on board, and the availability and periodic maintenance of the necessary equipment.
Through this initiative the VMA reaffirms its commitment to protecting the marine environment, complying with the provisions contained in the international conventions and cooperating with VMA Authorities in pursuit of the VMA’s objectives.
