Singapore has committed a second tranche of USD 3 million to enhance technical cooperation and training with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its Member States for 2026-2028. This is in addition to the initial USD 2 million committed for 2024-2025.
To date, around 3,100 officials from maritime administrations and port authorities across over 100 States and territories have participated in MPA Academy’s flagship programmes and courses under the IMO-Singapore Third Country Training Programme.
This renewed commitment builds on our partnership of over 25 years with the IMO, dating back to 1998 when Singapore became the first country to sign an MoU for the Third Country Training Programme.
The funding will support crucial training programmes focused on:
- Preparing seafarers for the future with training on alternative fuels
- Enhancing maritime digitalisation capabilities
- Strengthening marine casualty investigation skills
- Building capacity across the international maritime community
This commitment was announced by Acting Minister for Transport and Senior Minister of State for Finance, Mr Jeffrey Siow, at the inaugural Global Aviation and Maritime Symposium on 14 July 2025.
