MARITIME SUTRA

Sea of Maritime Insights

A vessel was inspected by California Air Quality Management District authority at Long Beach and, after this Inspection, the ship was served with Notice of Violation stating that the vessel failed to maintain pressure relief valves free from gaseous leaks (11 counts).

During passage to discharge port of Long Beach overhauling of all PV valves was carried out. The SC AQMD team detected gas leaks measured in parts per million with very highly sensitive equipment on 11 from 17 PV Valves. As per California rules, maximum allowed reading should be no more 1000 PPM of HC gases at distance less than 1cm from source. Detected readings of 11 PV valves were found higher. Each PV valve inspection took 5-10 minutes.

Concurrently with the inspectors the vessel checked for gas ieaks with the portabie HC detector onboard and the reading obtained was 0% LEL. Soap water test and vessel gas detectors were unable to detect leaks of HC gas. Vessel had carried out the last tank vapor tightness test on 28 Jan 2025 and found all in good condition.
