ITOPF released annual summary of oil spills from tankers for 2025.
In total, six spills were recorded last year—three large spills (>700 tonnes) and three medium spills (7–700 tonnes). This brings the current decade’s average to seven spills per year, a significant improvement compared with previous decades, though slightly above the 2010s average of 6.3.
All incidents involved crude or fuel oil in Asia and Europe, with an estimated 4,000 tonnes of oil lost, less than half the total recorded in 2024. Long‑term data shows spill numbers and volumes remain low and stable in comparison to earlier decades, reflecting continued improvements in tanker safety and operational standards.
However, accidents remain possible, and maintaining this commitment is vital for protecting the marine environment.
Beyond tanker incidents, ITOPF continued to respond to a wide range of marine pollution events throughout 2025, supporting stakeholders with on‑site technical advice, information for authorities and affected communities, and expertise on substances other than oil.
As alternative fuels become more common across the global fleet, ITOPF’s investment in HNS training, preparedness materials, and contingency planning support ensures we remain ready to assist whenever and wherever needed.
