Risks Sudden failures such as main engine breakdowns, steering gear malfunctions, or power blackouts may lead to:
- Collisions, groundings, or contact incidents
- Blockage of major fairways disrupting traffic flow
- Environmental pollution from oil or cargo spills
- Endangerment of crew and vessel integrity
