BSU Releaded the investigation report on injury suffered on board Ro-Pax. Two passengers on a RoPax ferry suffered severe finger injuries while attempting to open hydraulically operated watertight doors to access their vehicles. The injuries occurred due to crushing hazards between the door frame and door leaf, exacerbated by the door’s multi-corrugated profile and lack of safety devices in the opening direction. Older passengers and those with walking disabilities used the door frame for support due to the high threshold and absence of handrails. The door design did not account for all operational hazards, leading to unsafe conditions.

Key lessons include assessing risks for all door movements and ensuring doors are designed for safe use by people with disabilities, potentially incorporating handrails, corrugated panels, or brush strips. Manufacturers, owners, and operators of watertight doors can benefit from these insights.
