Bulk carrier Altay (IMO: 9349992), which experienced a fire on board while moored at Albert Dock, Hull, United Kingdom on Jun 27, has had the fire extinguished, according to the fire service. Humberside Fire and Rescue crews were called to Albert Dock at about 1020 hrs, BST, Jun 27, after a blaze broke out in a cargo hold containing 3,500 tonnes of scrap metal, causing a plume of smoke to spread across the city centre. The fire was brought under control by approximately 0500 hrs, BST, today, and crews remained at the scene to ensure there was no risk of reignition, a fire service spokesperson stated. All those on board had been accounted for, it had earlier been confirmed. However, the fire service added that people in the area may still be able to see and smell smoke.
The spokesperson also warned that residents and workers nearby might notice wisps of steam rising from the dock as part of the ongoing cooling process and advised the public not to be alarmed. A strong smell of smoke remains in the area. At the height of the incident, five fire engines, an aerial platform, and marine-trained fire crews were involved in the operation to bring the blaze under control. During the fire, wind direction pushed smoke towards Hull city centre, prompting police to close Kingston Retail Park, the Marina, English Street, Wellington Street, and Jackson Street. These closures were lifted later in the evening.
