According to reports, ferry Conscience (IMO: 7211440, 1029 gt, built 1971), part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, reportedly came under drone attack in international waters approximately 14 nautical miles off the coast of Malta, at around 0020 hrs, local time on 02nd May 2025. Reportedly, the vessel sustained two strikes targeting its bow and generator, resulting in a fire and a hull breach, leaving it without power and at risk of sinking.

The Maltese authorities, upon receiving a Mayday call, dispatched a nearby firefighting-equipped tug and an Armed Forces of Malta patrol vessel to assist. Firefighting operations commenced promptly, and the fire was reported under control by 0128 hrs. All 12 crew members and four passengers onboard were confirmed safe by 0213 hrs, although they refused evacuation.

Communication with the vessel is currently impossible due to fire damage to the electrical system. The mission’s team in Malta briefly contacted the crew, who confirmed that everyone is safe, though some experienced slight injuries. Activists are calling for an investigation into the attack and the safety of those aboard while assessing the vessel’s condition.

The vessel remains outside Maltese territorial waters and is being monitored by the relevant authorities.
