AMSA released the 31st edition of Maritime Safety awareness bulletin. The latest issue of the Maritime Safety Awareness Bulletin focuses on managing risks on vessels and the importance of effective risk assessment practices.
In some shipboard environments, the perceived risks of some tasks such as working at height or over the side can gradually become normalised, resulting in unsafe practises and behaviours which may increase the likelihood of serious incidents. High-risk operational tasks—such as working at heights or over the side—require careful risk assessment and management to ensure crew safety.
Risk assessment is a fundamental part of a vessel’s Safety Management System (SMS), as required under the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. However, for risk assessments to be truly effective, risks must be thoroughly identified, safety controls included to reduce the risk, and the outcomes must be properly implemented.
